In the spring of 1864, Union general Ulysses S. Grant moved his troops across the Rapidan River to engage confederate troops, hoping to stamp out the rebellion in time for the upcoming presidential election. Back in the Virginia Wilderness again, the Federals sustained heavy casualties. But as Lee kept up the onslaught, Grant pressed on to Petersburg.
