Though the Americans had been advocating for independence since 1775, and they were already engaged in battle with the British forces to gain that independence, a formal declaration wasn’t drafted until 1776. A committee of five worked on the document, with Thomas Jefferson spearheading the writing. Drawing upon previous American political documents, Jefferson drafted our Declaration of Independence. This document would become one of the nation’s most important contributions, to posterity as well as to the world.
