After the Civil War, President Andrew Johnson and the Congress each tried reconstructing America in different ways. In his lenient approach to the newly reunited South, Johnson handed out pardons to former Confederates. Congress, on the other hand, aggressively pursued the enfranchisement and liberty of black Americans.
