During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act, which set into motion the creation of America’s first transcontinental railroad. Between 1863 and 1869, a largely immigrant labor force laid the tracks and hammered the spikes. Promontory Summit, Utah, marked the meeting point of Union and Central Pacific.
