After the fall of Richmond, Grant and Sheridan chased Lee, forcing him to wage one last battle in Appomattox County, Virginia. The Union won the encounter, and Lee realized that the time for negotiation had arrived. The Confederate commander met with Grant in the home of Wilmer McLean—whose previous home had been damaged during the first Battle of Manassas. Grant offered generous peace terms to the Confederacy.
