Farragut spearheads an attempt to capture New Orleans, a major Confederate port. Dramatic naval warfare ensues. Following success, Union forces move up the Mississippi, seizing Baton Rouge and Natchez along the way. At Vicksburg, the North hits insurmountable resistance from Confederate cannon fire atop the bluffs there. On the whole, however, 1862 brings a wave of Union victories in the Western theater.
