Congress attempted to govern the South after the Civil War. Initially, civil rights were secured for black Americans. President Andrew Johnson and the Radical Republicans clashed, resulting, among other things, in America’s first impeachment. President Ulysses S. Grant battled the Ku Klux Klan. With the Compromise of 1877, Reconstruction ended. The nation remained divided.
