When the Ellis Island Immigration Station opened its doors in 1892, no one could have anticipated the impact it made on New York and the rest of America. Around 12 million immigrants came through its doors, seeking a new life of hope and freedom. From the Irish-immigrant, Annie Moore, to the millions of Eastern Europeans who settled on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, these immigrants shaped much of American culture from the 20th century beyond.
