In the early 1800s, the westward push by American settlers led to a clash between Native Americans and the U.S. government. On one side was William Henry Harrison, the governor of the Indiana Territory. On the other was Shawnee chief, Tecumseh, and his brother, a prophet named Tenskwatawa. In order to combat the influx of white settlers, Tecumseh formed a confederation of native tribes. At the pivotal battle of Tippecanoe, however, American forces under Harrison defeated Tecumseh. Years later, Harrison ascended to the presidency with the tagline: “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too.”
