As the war raged on in New England, the Patriots were forced out of New York City, losing control of it to the British. The British were confident that the war would soon be over as reinforcements arrived on American shores, but Washington refused to surrender. After further defeats in battle, the Patriot army had few options left. Then, on Christmas night in 1776, Washington decided on a bold strategic attack.
